5 Eco Heroes We’ve Featured

Regular followers of our Instagram will know of our program called Talented Tuesdays, where we interview, shoot, and feature outstanding people living and working in New York City. We are very proud of all our Talents and we consider ourselves very lucky to have had the chance to work with so many amazing people, but we are always especially excited when we come across a Talent actively working towards healing the environment. So today we’re going to take a look at 5 of these eco-heroes we’ve featured, and hope their journeys and activism will inspire more people to take up the cause.

1 Shannon Kenny

First up is Shannon Kenny, otherwise known as Mama Eco. Shannon is a creative soul who studied painting in graduate school, and so her blog Mama Eco helps her combine her expressive side with her love of the environment. Her blog and her Instagram are filled with amazing things for environment lovers of all types, including easy beginner tips on reducing waste, products for lovers of all things reusable, DIY advice for all sorts of easy zero-waste swaps, and more. Whether you’re just starting to explore zero-waste living or are a seasoned expert, you’ll find plenty to love on her media.

2 Lauren Engelke

Next Up is Lauren Engelke, aka The Sustainable Stylist. Lauren worked as an on-set tailor and stylists when she started wondering why the industry was so wasteful and what could be done about it. She decided to take matters into her own hands and now has a career making styling and tailoring sustainable. Doing personal styling, on-set work, and collaborations, Lauren is working to bring sustainably made fabrics, low-waste production, and killer style to all corners of the fashion industry. We’re proud to have worked with her right when she was launching the blog portion of her business and can’t wait to see what the future brings for her.

For Joanne, sustainability is the future, and she is working to make that future a reality everyday. Currently a material science/engineering PhD candidate, Jo has led research projects based on technology for sustainable agriculture, studied atmospheric science, oceanic science, data science, and anthropology. A genuine climate scientist, Jo believes that we need to change our current linear world do a cyclical one, following the example of nature. Somehow she also finds the time to be a professional artist, and uses her paintings to bridge the scientific and artistic world together.

5 Teru Murao

Last but certainly not least we have Terumi Murao. Teru is a model and stylist who focuses in second hand fashion (yes, everything you see above has been thrifted). For her, second hand fashion presents a creative challenge, a puzzle to figure out how to make the most exciting outfits out of whatever she can find. This extra energy means there is more time and care with each outfit, which she believes in turn gives each outfit more life. Inspired by her love of the outdoors and outdoor sports, she especially enjoys outdoor photoshoots. Be sure to also check out her Beacon's Closet interview as well as our Talented Tuesday feature, and think of Teru’s bold styling next time you get your thrift game on.
