Sustainably Chic June: It's Summer!

Welcome to our series Sustainably Chic. Each month we internet-window shop for two new outfits all chosen from sustainable, ethical, and environmental brands, and we make sure at least one of those outfits has no animal products for our vegan readers. At Rust and Fray, we believe that living sustainably is a lifestyle choice, and we’d like to help you find an outfit that not only matches your bag but lets you be environmentally conscious from head to toe. We’re here to show you how good sustainability can look and how easy it can be to find.

It’s officially summer time! The barbecues are out, the swimming pools and beaches are open, and school is out (our condolences to all the parents out there). So we’ve got some cute looks gathered here as you lounge around in the sun or attend a nighttime rooftop party.

The Bag: Nomad AG Azure Gabardine Duffel

Sturdy and spacious, this is the perfect bag for a woman running around a busy city during the day and finding a nice patch of grass to lounge in for the evening. Shakespeare in the Park anyone? Whatever the occasion, you’ll be prepared and sustainable. Now let's look at the outfit.

Outfit 1

Tonle - Nearady Top, Mustard

Alternative Apparel - Vintage cut off shorts

Sseko - Brown Leather Ribbon Sandals

Proof Eyewear - Elmore Eco

Flowing T-Shirts are fantastic for staying cool during those hot summer days, so we’ve got a cute bright and sustainably made one for you. Add in some fun jeans shorts and amazing looking tie-it-yourself hippy ribbon sandals and you’re ready to beat the heat in style. We threw in some wooden shades to protect the peepers and the planet.

Outfit 2: Vegan Version

The Bag: Latitude CV Vegan Leather Messenger Bag, Blue

A sleek little shoulder bag for all the vegans out there, it comes with our signature cell phone case and a several inner pockets to help prevent your bag from becoming the inescapable void of old receipts.

The Outfit:

Tonle - Nearady top, coral

Alternative Apparel - Go-to Spandex Jersey leggings

Rafa - The Simple Sandal, Sloe

Proof Eyewear - Challis Aluminum

We’re keeping the idea of the big flowy shirt to look and feel cool, but switching up for another color that works wonders with the blue bag. With the yellow straps of the bag, you’ll have hints of all three primary colors without giving off a superman vibe. Of course, one of the best silhouettes with a loose top are form fitting pants, so we found a pair of sustainable leggings. Add in a classy pair of sandal-heels and some cool blue shades and you’re ready for the long days and the mojitos.

Companies in this outfit:

Tonle - Zero-waste, fair trade, and fiercely fashionable

Alternative Apparel - Quite a few staples and must-haves made sustainably

Rafa- Sustainable vegan shoes. Need we say more?

Proof Eyewear - One of the pioneers in making Eyewear sustainable

SSeko - Handcrafted Ugandan leather sandals and accessories, with a focus on helping the young Ugandan women who make them transition to getting a University education.
